Forensic science is one of the fastest growing career options in India but students have little knowledge about the career. The majority of students learn about forensic science from television crime shows, documentaries, or social media, and may get a partial understanding of the field. Although these sources generate interest, they do not usually help students after class 12th determine if forensic science is a career that is appropriate for them.
AIFSET (All India Forensic Science Entrance Test) saw this gap and launched the Forensic Science Immersive Experience Programme, which aims to give students a taste of forensic science before they choose to pursue it as a career.
AIFSET realised that many students were making career decisions without considering information. Career counselling, university brochures and online information about courses and eligibility do not illustrate to students what professionals do in the field.
The concept of the Forensic Science Immersive Experience Programme is straightforward: students should have a chance to experience forensic science before deciding on a career in the field.
Rather than just reading about crime scene investigation, evidence analysis, or forensic laboratories, students have the opportunity to experience these first hand.
Forensic Science Immersive Experience Programme by AIFSET is a two-day experiential learning programme conducted at universities throughout India. Students visit the campus hosting it and participate in CSI, expert sessions, simulations and visit FSL with experts in these two days hands-on forensic science experience programme.
The programme has been designed to close the gap between curiosity and career clarity, and to give students an insight into what forensic science is beyond the books.
The programme aims to expose students to different aspects of Forensic Science in a practical manner. The following are some of the major activities:
Students learn how investigators process a crime scene, identify evidence, document observations and reconstruct events using scientific methods.
The participants are introduced to the basic techniques of collecting, developing and comparing fingerprints in a forensic investigation.
Experts show how bloodstain patterns can be used to help with an investigation.
Students learn about the collection, analysis and interpretation of forensic evidence in relation to investigations.
Participants meet directly with forensic scientists, academics and industry professionals to learn about career opportunities and industry expectations.
Students get an opportunity to visit a state forensic laboratory, see the working, meet experts there, and experience what actually happens inside.
The one of the greatest benefits of the programme is that it enables students to make informed career choices. Students often have limited knowledge of forensic science when they start the programme. At the end of the experience, they have a much better understanding of the profession, the skills needed and the opportunities available.
The programme enables students to:
The first step to making future forensic experts is to create awareness. AIFSET is supporting students to learn about forensic science at an early stage of their education, enabling them to make informed decisions about their future education and career.
AIFSET is making the programme available in universities throughout India, giving students access to experiences they would not otherwise have had. The program not only exposes students to the field of forensic science, but also promotes scientific thinking, curiosity, observation, and problem-solving skills, which are essential traits of effective forensic investigators.
Experiential learning is gaining significance as students are becoming more career-oriented and want to have clarity before opting for a specialised field. The Forensic Science Immersive Experience Programme by AIFSET is a new way to explore a career in forensic science before taking the plunge.
AIFSET is bringing together CSI activities, forensic science demonstrations, laboratory exposure and expert guidance to help students to make informed decisions and go beyond assumptions about their future. The organisation is doing a great job in shaping the next generation of forensic science professionals in India.
As forensic science continues to grow in India, students need opportunities to explore the profession before committing to it. Through the Forensic Science Immersive Experience Programme, AIFSET is helping students gain that clarity. By combining practical exposure, expert guidance, and real-world learning experiences, the initiative is enabling the next generation of forensic professionals to make informed decisions about their future.
